I’m beginning to lose sight of what is unsettling and what is just confused.

I recently moved to New York, thrusting myself in this sea of unfamiliarity, of 8 million people, strangers essentially, and feel more alone than ever. So I’m starting a new series of photographing this new world. Completely candidly, without thought or awareness that these are even being captured. And I am interested to see where this will end- because one can only stay anonymous for so long.

So here is the first photo in the series.

family.

Im back at Sewanee trying to make sense of my thesis. Over break, both at home and visiting family in New Orleans, I collected and copied a ton of old family photographs. After grappling with taking my own photos last year, I realized that a large portion of this work is about using found materials, and I have found an absolute love of working with very old and raw material. So I am once again, going to start over [more or less- must keep reminding myself I already have a completed body of video work] using these old family photographs. I know I also want to use text, but am unsure how it is all going to come together; with the video series, I used stranger’s home movies and manipulated that with my own history, so Im curious to see how that will turn out using my own photographs with, perhaps, fictional stories. But for now I am content scanning all of these photos, for what purpose will be seen later.
