At every instant and from every side, resounds the call of Love:
We are going to sky, who wants to come with us?
We have gone to heaven, we have been the friends of the angels,
And now we will go back there, for there is our country.
We are higher than heaven, more noble than the angels:
Why not go beyond them? Our goal is the Supreme Majesty.
What has the fine pearl to do with the world of dust?
Why have you come down here? Take your baggage back. What is this place?
Luck is with us, to us is the sacrifice!…
Like the birds of the sea, men come from the ocean—the ocean of the soul.
Like the birds of the sea, men come from the ocean—the ocean of the soul.
How could this bird, born from that sea, make his dwelling here?
No, we are the pearls from the bosom of the sea, it is there that we dwell:
Otherwise how could the wave succeed to the wave that comes from the soul?
The wave named ‘Am I not your Lord’ has come, it has broken the vessel of the body;
And when the vessel is broken, the vision comes back, and the union with Him._Rumi_
back at the beginning, my old roommate and i would take long back-road drives through tennessee. somewhere along those dusty roads, we became great friends. and fell in love with photography.
My old boss and friend, Stephen Alvarez, received photo of the day by National Geographic Magazine for a photo he took during his Underground Paris story last year. See the photo here and check out the rest of his stunning work.
Way to go Stephen! You continue to be amazing!
today, i am absolutely appreciating the kindness of strangers. i stumbled across joyce gehl’s [above] beautiful encaustic work a few days ago, and casually sent her an email about her process with wax medium and photography, not really expecting the hear back.
but i just received the sweetest email from joyce, completely explaining her process, giving me other artists to look at, and even talking to me about my work [thank you google] and how wax could enhance it.
it is this kind of thing that reminds me how wonderful the art community is- full of support and help and encouragement. now i cant wait to get home and start playing with my paper that arrived today!
and speaking of support, check out my amazing old roommate.
I’ve been in love with John Folsom for a while now, and have recently been carefully looking at some of his work, along with others who use different mediums on top of prints. Am thinking of experimenting with wax medium and maybe some gouache paints in conjunctions with some of the landscape images I’ve been working with. I want to start using my hands more and make work less computer based, and without a darkroom, this seems like an exciting way to start.
Note: for those of you who know of my “painting” abilities, this should be interesting to watch…

this is an amazing video by angela kohler and ithyle griffith, better known as the people who made the awesome stop motion videos for amazon.
i start trying all this calm stuff, quiet photos, but its not for me. even the empty spaces are so loud, in my mind.
once, when skimming through work, my then photo professor, caroline allison, stumbled across this photo of mine and realized that she had a photo that looked eerily similar. same tree. same repetitive foggy morning. both snapped haphazardly on the drive back to sewanee.
looking back, it makes me wonder what it was about that moment, that tree, that captured both of our attentions and willed us to pick up our cameras? as photographers, are we all conditioned to look similarly at the world around us, or was this just a coincidence, marked by the view of something beautiful standing out from the rest of our foggy surroundings?
Been looking a lot at Nan Goldin’s work, especially the Ballad of Sexual Dependency. Thinking a lot about the quote she said, “there is a popular notion that the photography is by nature a voyeur, the last one invited to the past. But I’m not crashing, this is my party. This is my family, my history.” What does it mean to document my history, relationships, friends, family, lovers? Is that voyeurism, or just an need to try and record and make sense of what is around me?
Absolutely have fallen in with this song, band, and video.
